Marmorino Venetian Plaster Technique Drying Tips

Venetian Plaster Technique Drying Tips:

HELP! This stuff is drying too fast!

OK, you should know that you just cannot do a faux painting project by yourself in a 3-story, 2000 square space right?? Well if you didn't before you do know now. There is just no possible way for you to avoid getting a dreaded lap line on your faux finishing project or a cold joint on your stucco or other Venetian plastering project unless you have an adequate number of people working with you. See our labor tips for some basic ideas on faux finishing helpers.

Here are some tips for getting the most open time possible:

If you are working in a very arid location the faux painting materials can start to dry a lot faster than you'd like. Something that will alleviate this somewhat is to run a cool air humidifier for a couple hours in the room you are going to be working in. This will help put more moisture in the air. More moisture equals slower evaporation of you glazing medium to give you more open time to work with the glazes and/or venetian plasters. You should also try to avoid air flow over the surface you are working on until you are finished. Watch out for those air vents, they can mess you up.

Other important tips: Always use a high quality glazing liquid for faux painting, such as Superglaze. Make sure your walls are properly prepared and sealed with a high quality acrylic paint with at least an eggshell sheen. For Venetian plaster and other decorative plastering projects keep a spray bottle handy to mist you substrate as you go.

And most importantly, like we train our students to, work really fast! The faster you do a large scale wall finish the better it will look. You may not believe it now but this is what we call the wall finishing paradox and grasshopper, the simple Zen-like knowing of this paradox will forever change your life as a faux painter.

Curious now? Want to learn much, much more? Dozens of invaluable tips like this one are taught at our decorative finishing school. Check out our Architectural Wall Finishing and other classes.
