Featured SAFS Student Diane Duff on Venetian Plaster Techniques
|
Duff has been trained in many of the best schools in the country. She started with
a 5-day class at Seattle Architectural Finishing Studios taught by Master Finisher,
Aaron Cohen.
The unique finishes that she learned at SAFS found a strong demand; business grew rapidly
and so did her repertoire of faux finishing techniques as she took training from some of the
modern masters of faux finishing.
In 1998 Diane Duff opened Viking Studios in Whitefish, Montana. Diane has set her goal not
just to offer the basic faux finishes, but to offer finishes which are several steps above
the norm. Viking Studios today offers a wide variety of professional finishes including:
Venetian plasters, Old World textures, European plasters, European furniture finishing,
Trompe l'oeil, murals, faux marbles and faux wood. These finishes are available to
homeowners, businesses and designers in northwest Montana.

In 2004, Diane began to give instruction in professional faux finishing techniques at
her school in Kalispell, Montana. Students have the opportunity to learn the techniques she
practices as well as receive instruction in using the unique professional grade products
available to the faux finishing trade.
Diane believes there is always more to learn and so she attends workshops and conferences a
few times each year and travels back to Seattle at least once a year to take more classes
from Aaron.

Diane graduated from college with a teaching degree and taught at the secondary school
level. After years at that career, she got her degree in Psychiatric Counseling and worked
2 years at a psychiatric hospital and then had a private practice for 7 years.
Quite by accident, she became interested in faux finishing and attended Aaron's 5-day
Designer Wall Painting Class.
Within a year of taking the class, she had closed her private
practice, opened Viking Studios, and returned to
Aaron Cohen
for several more classes. She
is married to Dale and has 2 step children and 1 granddaughter.
