Featured SAFS Student Shannon Kaye, New host of DIY's "Fresh Coat"

Watch the DIY Network channel on Mondays at 11:30 AM and Fridays 1:30 PM Pacific Time and you can brush up with "Fresh Coat", written and hosted by featured SAFS student Shannon Kaye! "Fresh Coat" is a "just paint" makeover show that illustrates what a can of paint and a little imagination can do to completely change the look and feel of a room.

Shannon's finishes are based on traditional decorative painting techniques, but her style has evolved far beyond what is now popularly called "faux" painting. She uses textures, layers, and patterns to create rich, deep surfaces that complement her personalized design schemes. "A finish should be subtle, sophisticated, and somewhat mysterious," she says. "And the overall interior should speak to the unique qualities and belongings of those who use it."

Shannon's love of color and paint led her to attend the Academy of Art College in San Francisco starting in 1993. She attended for three years studying interior design and industrial design. But it was a chance meeting with a well known decorative painter that gave her the critical education she needed. She apprenticed for a year learning the intimate details of decorative painting and gained her first sense of what it takes to make a living as an artist.

Striking out on her own in 1997, one of Shannon's first moves was to attend classes with Aaron Cohen. "Aaron's classes were a godsend to me, especially when it came to starting my own business. He has in-depth knowledge about the mediums he uses, and provides a wealth of practical tips from bidding on projects to solving creative on-site problems. I gained invaluable tools, resources, and encouragement from Aaron. He's the greatest!"

While she makes her living as an artist and interior designer for affluent homeowners in the San Francisco Bay Area, Shannon Kaye has traveled as far as New York and Florida painting and designing in her own unique style. "I love making people happy whether I'm working on a high profile project or giving do-it-yourself advice. Aaron is always generous with his knowledge, and I've incorporated that practice into my business as well. It's more rewarding and fun that way."

In addition to hosting Fresh Coat for DIY her work has been shown in Mary Engelbreit's Home Companion Magazine and featured in the Pottery Barn Kid's catalog. She also enjoys creating fine art.
