Jan Dressler Stenciling Workshop
Jan Dressler, a renowned Instructor and owner of Jan Dressler Stencils, Inc, will be
teaching this workshop here at the Seattle Architectural Finishing Studio.
The Focus of this Workshop will be the Anatomy and Design of Stenciling, with emphasis
on learning basic stencil techniques to dimensional Trompe l'oeil Stenciling with
Specialty Products such as Lime based plaster with glazes and waxes. Students learn
to achieve a sophisticated look with the use of color to create an elegant dimensional
look with this exciting Stenciling Workshop! All levels welcomed.

Stencil Course Breakdown
Day 1: Introduction to stencils and stenciling techniques.
Students will review anatomy of stencils, stencil design, stenciling technique and basic techniques
including Using stencils to run a repeating border, creating wallpaper repeats and using different
surfaces.
Note: Any remaining class time will be spent making basic stencil sample boards using various designs
provided for in class use.
Day 2: Students will create samples using trompe l'oeil stencils and the demonstrated
techniques.
Trompe l'oeil stenciling will include: Perspective, what makes things look real? What are qualities
to look for in stencils for trompe l'oeil? Shadowing and shading for realism and Layering images.
Day3: Students will make sample boards from provided designs and media.
Students will gain experience using Dimensional pastes and various stencil thickness to achieve
embossed look on surfaces. Here students can use anything that they would like to introduce. For
example crackle and crumble would be excellent to use. Instructor will introduce some interesting
new stencils that are great for deep relief. They will also be introduced to specialty products,
various lime paints and glazes, Dressler Dimensionals and La Grande Image Masking patterns.
